An Indian Air Force (IAF) contingent comprising four Dassault Rafale fighters, two Boeing C-17 Globemaster III strategic airlifters and IL-78 airborne refueller have arrived in Darwin, Australia, to participate in the Royal Australian Air Force’s (RAAF) Exercise Pitch Black 2026.
More than 120 IAF personnel are taking part in the exercise, the RAAF’s largest multinational air combat exercise, which is conducted across northern Australia’s vast military training areas.
Exercise Pitch Black 2026 will also mark the debut participation of Japan Air Self-Defence Force (JASDF) F-35A Lightning II fighters and Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU) T-50i Golden Eagle light combat aircraft.
The exercise will involve up to 100 aircraft and more than 2,500 personnel from 20 nations operating from RAAF Bases Darwin, Tindal and Amberley. Participating nations include Australia, Brunei, Canada, Fiji, Finland, France, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, the United Kingdom and the United States.
According to Australia’s Department of Defence, the name “Pitch Black” originated from the exercise’s early emphasis on night flying over northern Australia’s sparsely populated training areas.
First held in 1981 as a three-day air defence exercise from RAAF Base Williamtown, Pitch Black has been conducted biennially since 1988, with the exception of 2020 when it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
